Racing into another weekend
What a glorious weekend! In fact, there was so much going on that it almost didn’t feel like a weekend at all. We were treated to a Friday St. Patrick’s Day that coincided with The Gold Cup, which must have been very special for Irish racing fans. The race itself was won by the gelding Galopin Des Champs, from the stables of legendary Irish trainer Willie Mullins. He was also the favourite, meaning there must have been a lot of celebrating among punters from the Emerald Isle!
Leaving England green with envy.
As if all that wasn’t enough for fans of Irish sport, the Rugby Union team (appropriately nicknamed ‘The Shamrocks’) stormed past England to win The Six Nations Grand Slam. Amazingly, this was the first time in the tournament’s long and storied history that Ireland had won the Grand Slam in Dublin. We can imagine celebrations went on well into the night and we’d like to offer our huge congratulations to all fans of this history-making side. Mum’s the word.
Sunday was, of course, Mothering Sunday. Or ‘Mother’s Day’ as it’s now widely known. This Christian festival, which always falls on the Sunday three weeks before Easter, was originally intended to honour the Virgin Mary. It was also a day on which people were required to return to their ‘mother church’ (the main church or cathedral in the diocese). As a result, it became a rare opportunity for families to be reunited (poorer families and their children often had to separate to find work) and give thanks to their own mothers. This gave rise to something more like today, where we pay tribute to our dear mums. Gasm Drinks is of course a family business (we all play active roles), so we should take this opportunity to say thanks to Sam, who’s Tommy and Lottie’s mother and the matriarch of the company. Fields and dreams.
Mentioning Sam reminds us, naturally, of the finer things in life, which is an ongoing theme in this blog series. As she, Tommy and Lottie are off on a well-deserved holiday, it gives those of us who are holding the fort the chance to reflect on those little moments of luxury and pleasure that make life so special. Our decision to start a ready-to-drink Champagne-style cocktail brand was inspired by a fortifying flute of sloegasm after a day in the field. The warming kick and slightly spicy fruitiness from the sloe gin and the enlivening sparkle of the bubbly filled us with pleasure. So much pleasure, in fact, that we wished we could bottle it. The only special drink that’s actually unique.
Right from the beginning, we knew we wanted to create a drink for people to treat themselves with. We were also determined to blaze a new trail: the thought of creating a new brand of wine or spirit just didn’t excite us. If you think about it, there really aren’t many bottles you can buy for a special occasion that can truly be described as unique. Using our love of sloegasm as inspiration, we realised that there were one or two flaws with this classic shooting cocktail. First, the inconvenience of having to carry a bottle of bubbly and a bottle of sloe gin and then needing to mix them on the hoof. Secondly, we also felt that the UK has other fabulous fruits with which you can flavour gin: why limit ourselves to sloe berry? Now that we had a vision, we set about perfecting our range. Of course, we needed Gasm Drinks to be of exceptional quality, but we didn’t want to create anything that was out of reach for a reasonable ‘special occasion’ budget. Working with a world-renowned sommelier for over nine months (it’s a tough job but someone has to do it), we chose a refined sparkling white from the Veneto region of Italy. We then distilled powerful fruit gins using handpicked raspberries, plums and sloe berries and combined them with the elegant fizz to create a perfect bottle of bubbly. The result isn’t a Prosecco, it’s not a Champagne cocktail: it is, quite simply, Gasm.
